America’s Favorite House Styles
About.com:Architecture is currently running a survey asking Americans what their favorite architectural home style is and here are the current results! Be sure to vote yourself at the link below, or, at least see if you agree with the results below so far.
1. The number one most popular style is the Craftsman Bungalow style. These homey abodes have low-pitched roofs, exposed rafters and swept across America around the turn-of-the-century. Perhaps, they are beginning another comeback?
2. Tudor and English Country House Styles are currently scoring a close second. These Medieval style homes can be cottage-sized or large manor homes, but one thing they have in common regardless of their size is that many Americans love their charm, diamond-paned windows and exposed wood framing.
3. Victorian Queen Anne House styles came in third and this style has an elaborate feel with details such as towers, wrap-around porches, bay windows and lots of trim work. The Victorian Age was a time in history and many styles reined during this period including Italianate style and Gothic Revival, but when people think of Victorian home designs they are typically envisioning the heavily decorated Queen Anne style.
4. The Georgian Colonial house style is number four and almost a polar opposite of the elaborate Victorian style. It is extremely symmetrical and orderly in appearance and even today many luxury homes are built in this style all across the country.
5. The Prairie house style is next on the list and was pioneered by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. This style originated near Chicago at the turn-of-the-century. These homes appear “one with nature”‘ since their low-pitched hipped roofs are so close to the earth.
