Baby Boomer Home Design Ideas

My parents are part of the baby boomer era. I really was unsure of what that meant but come to find out this term refers to any individual that was born between 1946 and 1964. My father is turning 50 and out of this era about one third of the baby boomers will reach this age next year. Yes! They are both getting older but I know my parents aren’t slowing down too much. They face different challenges but still have the same dreams, life goals and remain very active.

For the most part my parents friends that are baby boomers are not ready to throw in the towel, pull up a rocking chair and rock away. They are a group of mobile, active, and confident individuals. They are successful both personally and professionally and know what they want out of life.

My parents have made the decision that they want to stay in our cozy cottage home design. Luckily it is a ranch home plan and so retrofitting it so they can get around easier should be a breeze. I have researched some new trends and the correct term is not “retirement” but “universal.” Universal design ideas cover families with a stroller, wheelchair bound individuals, or persons that use a walker for stability. The main priority is convenience and ease of movement.

Some easy things to assist with mobility are to make sure the entrances are level, the floors are not slick but instead non-skid, to remove all the area rugs so that they can’t stumble over them, to make the doors and hallways wider, to change out the old door knobs and add lever-style door handles so they can grip them easier, and also add better lighting set and acoustics.

One benefit of owning a ranch home design is that the living spaces, bedrooms and baths are all on the main floor. I know the neighbors are in the process of moving their master bedroom and bathroom to the first floor so they don’t have to walk up and down the stairs. This was a lot cheaper than adding an elevator.

As my parents age, I think it would be a good idea to install multiple counter heights so they don’t have to bend over, to put in taller toilets, a curb-less shower and also attractive grab bars in the tub and shower.  When we make these changes we will add new surfaces are easy to clean, require little maintenance and are sustainable. The idea of putting TVs, lights, radios, shades and other items on a universal remote is a wonderful. That way everything is at their fingertips. I want to make sure their home does not appear to be a retirement home environment but one that is comfortable and familiar. Since I live out of state I need the peace of mind I’ve done all I can to keep them safe.

My aunt and uncle are around the same age as my parents but have a two-story home so they have decided to sell their home and build a new house plan; one that will accommodate their needs as they age. They have been researching stock plans on houseplansandmore.com for the specific styles ADA and also wheelchair/handicap accessible home plans .

Some of the great features of these homes include beautiful master bedrooms, kitchens a chef can only dream about, a guest suite that can be used for in-town family and friends and can double as a hobby space or sewing room. This type of room is considered “flex space” and is very popular because it can be adapted to the homeowner’s needs.

Another great amenity is the tech center or home office. Many baby boomers have the ability to work from home so this space fits their needs. It is not the stuffy old library but a high tech open space with computer hook ups and comfortable work areas. That’s not to say a few bookshelves aren’t a must but these tech centers are wired up for the most savvy of users.

Most of the home designs are one-story homes but some have the option to finish off the lower level for visiting guests, kids and grandchildren. This way houseguests do not become a nuisance and everyone is comfortable.

We are all seeking comfort when we enter the doors of our home. We want to kick back and relax. I know that as baby boomers like my parents age they want to remain in their home and continue with their lifestyle. It is great to know there are so many products and sensible ideas that will make their home universal. And for me I will also know they are safe.
