The next step in our building process was selecting the interior and exterior finishes for our home. This is a day many people dream about. In fact, I always have! After years of pinning my favorite interiors from Pinterest boards like House Plans and More and other home design companies, I thought it would be a cinch selecting the color scheme and materials for the outside of our home. I’m a huge fan of Pinterest boards about house plans, home decorating ideas, and other areas throughout the home including outdoor living areas. And, before social networks like Pinterest and Houzz, I was always ripping out gorgeous bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchen photo spreads from magazines, so it seemed like this day would feel like Christmas. In fact, I’ve basically been preparing for it for a lifetime.
Picking Color and Finishes
In preparation for our meeting with an interior designer who works with our builder and his customers, my husband and I spent the weekend before driving around looking at the exteriors of many Craftsman style home designs. In fact, the interior designer suggested that we do this. The exterior of our home features many types of finishes and finding a color scheme that isn’t too busy can be a challenge with Craftsman style homes. I immediately knew what she meant. We saw a lot of Craftsman homes and Country style home designs that weekend and there was a fine balance between an interesting exterior with lots of character, and a home that looked like something from the set of a TV show and a bit cartoon-like. I really wanted our new to have fantastic curb appeal.
So, I took a ton of pictures with my phone of our favorite exterior color combinations and I was feeling like we had a pretty good handle on how we wanted our home to look. Bold colors can certainly be fun, unexpected and memorable in a neighborhood, but we opted for neutral colors in beige for two of the siding choices and the stone colors, and a color a little darker for the shingle siding and garage door much like you see on this home. To complete the home, we decided on a dark grey/almost black door for a classic look. Now, it’s on to the interior color and finish selections…
