When we originally picked out our color selections for the interior an exterior materials, if you remember we drove around looking at various combinations for the exterior look of our home. Craftsman house plans like ours often include many types of siding styles. Our home was no different. All of the various textures no doubt add character to the exterior of Craftsman style homes, but it can be hard to get the finished look you were trying to achieve without the home appearing too busy.
Start With Easy Choices First
We knew we wanted white trim around the windows so that was an easy choice. I wanted that “wow” factor and the trim to really pop. Many homes now use ivory siding, but I find it can look dirty, so I was able to figure out that choice right away. And, we plan to add a white fence around the perimeter of our backyard and I wanted it to look seamless with the house. We definitely wanted a neutral look, so we stuck with taupe colors and steered away from the choices with more yellow undertones in them. The horizontal siding was a great neutral color that worked well with the stone and the vertical siding slightly contrasted the horizontal, while still in the same color range. In the gables, it is popular for Craftsman house designs to use shingle style siding. Shingle style home plans use this type of shingle siding for the entire exterior of the home, but Craftsman homes typically mix siding styles, so we went with a darker variation of a taupe color for the shingle siding. And, although these photos don’t show it yet, the garage door will match the color of the shingle siding to bring the color really into play.
What Do You Think?
Do you think it would be hard to choose colors with this many siding styles on the exterior? What do you think would be the easiest way to select colors? And, have you seen a really interesting color palette on a Craftsman home? If so, please share! I’d love to see other color selections and maybe siding companies should offer options that go together when choosing color palettes like this to make it easier for the homeowner.

I like how you had a plan for your home. I always look for function over form so I liked how you steered clear of the siding that gets and shows dirt. There are lot of options for siding and its hard to choose if you don’t have a plan.
